 Laser correction of vision defects consists in modelling a certain thickness of the cornea with a laser – depending on the defect.

 Our laser is a German excimer laser SCHWIND AMARIS® 500E – one of the best in the world. 

This excimer laser uses a cold beam of ultraviolet radiation to change the curvature of the cornea. 

Treatments with this laser are painless and fast. The treatment of one eye lasts up to 50 seconds.

The range of corrected defects: from -7.0 dioptres (myopia) to +4.0 dioptres (hyperopia) and up to 4.0 dioptres of cylindrical (astigmatism). 

We select the optimum Laser Vision Correction method for the patient on the basis of ophthalmic diagnostics and after medical consultation.

A cataract usually develops when the natural crystalline lens inside your eye becomes cloudy generally due to ageing. This can lead to blurred, hazy vision and colours may look dull. 

Person with cataract may also experiences glare or dazzling with bright lights. The only definitive treatment for cataracts is to surgically remove them. Once the cataract is removed, a synthetic lens is implanted in the eye. The vision generally rapidly improves. 

Refractive cataract surgery is an excellent solution if you want a safe and effective treatment for your cataract, and correct your short-sightedness, long-sightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia.

During your consultation, our doctor chooses lenses suitable for your eye.  This includes the option of using an advanced technology lens to reduce the dependence on glasses. Using an advanced technology lens — which is a multifocal lens — can help to treat refractive errors and restore your vision.

Intraocular lens exchange is an alternative for patients who want to get rid of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism but are not eligible for laser vision correction. At the Retina we use high quality equipment phacoemulsificator eva and many types of lenses. 

 In addition to the standard sterility requirements, we use additional special sterilisation devices

 to minimise infection and increase patient safety.

Strabismus is misalignment of the eyes and occurs with children and adults. If the eyes are out of alignment, one eye or the other is not used at any given moment, which impairs visual attention, depth perception  and motor skills. 

Misalignment of the eyes also can cause bothersome double vision.

• Surgery can be performed on children as young as four months of age and is an important option for older children and adults as well. It’s better to perform surgery as early as possible, because the brain circuits for binocular vision (using the two eyes together) are most adaptable at a young age. Strabismus surgery can still be performed on older children and adults, as these brain circuits continue to have some adaptability.
• Strabismus surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure, allowing patients to arrive as little as one hour before the scheduled procedure and return home a few hours after its completion.
• This surgery usually involves tightening or moving one or more of the outside eye muscles which move the eye to change the eye position.  These muscles are attached quite close to the front of the eye under the conjunctiva, the clear surface layer. The eye is never taken out of the socket during surgery. Stitches are used to attach the muscles in their new positions.
• There are two kinds of squint operation – adjustable and non-adjustable. In adjustable surgery, which can be performed in older children and adults, the stitches can be adjusted shortly after the surgery, when the patient is awake.
• Strabismus surgery is considered one of the safest of all eye procedures.
• You or your child can return to daycare, school or work one or two days after surgery. 
• Redness of the eyes usually disappears in a few weeks.

At Retina we have two experienced ophthalmologists who perform strabismus surgery in children and adults.

Before each procedure a full ophthalmological diagnostics is performed in RETINA.

Basic information on individual treatments :

1. Laser Eye Surgery : 

• Patient sends us the results of: corneal topography, corneal thickness, pupil width, tear film – which enables initial qualification for the surgery
• After the patient arrives at Retina, we perform a full qualification (all diagnostic tests) to determine the possibility and type of surgery to be performed.
• Qualification must take place a day before the surgery because the patient’s pupil is dilated (with special drops) which makes it impossible to perform laser correction surgery on the same day.
• The follow up visit takes place 3 days after the surgery. If everything is fine, the patient can go home. 

2. Cataract /refractive cataract/intraocular lens exchange:

• Patient sends us the results of: corneal topography, biometry, OCT and completed questionnaire prepared by Retina.
• Based on the results we determine the waiting time for the lens, especially in the case of toric lenses the time is discussed individually for each patient.
• Qualification must take place at least 3 days before the surgery because the doctor must decide on the type of lens required for the patient (single vision toric and multifocal toric lenses due to their specificity require special order, waiting time is up to 6 weeks, this situation requires  a comprehensive interview with the patient).
• Medical check-up takes place a day after the surgery and if there are no other medical contraindications, the patient can go home.
• Subsequent control visits (if necessary) may take place online with the patient’s attending physician.

3. Strabismus:

• Patient sends us a photo of their  face with open eyes, close enough to see the whole face, and a photo of the eyes wide open a this allows to do a preliminary qualification for the surgery
• After the arrival there is a visit, after which the doctor finally qualifies the patient for the operation.
• The operation can take place the next day. The patient is under general anaesthesia for about an hour.
• Postoperative check up takes place 2 days after the operation and the next day the patient can safely return home by plane.
• If the patient, for specific reasons, has not been qualified for the strabismus surgery, we can offer them orthoptic rehabilitation. 
• During the rehabilitation visits orthoptist teaches the patient special eye exercises (optimal for their defect). 
• The patient will also receive videos with exercises instructions and small orthoptic devices for further rehabilitation at home.
• We follow the progress of rehabilitation by online communication with the patient. 
• We suggest that the patient returns to Retina for a recheck after about 6 months.

4. Blepharoplasty:

• The patient sends us photos : 3 clear shots of the face, each with the eyes open and closed (there are 6 photos in total):   a frontal amphange photo, a 45 degree angle and a full profile photo.
• Upon arrival, an appointment with doctor is made.
• The surgery can take place the next day or still on the day of of the qualification for the surgery.
• A follow-up visit (including removal of stitches etc) takes place after a week and the patient can then go home.
• Follow-up appointments online.

        Oculoplasty:

• The patient sends us photos of the face with the lesions to be operated on: 3 clear shots of the face, each with the eyes open and closed (there are 6 photos in total):   a frontal amphangeal photo, a 45 degree angle and a full profile photo.
• Small lesions (such as cysts, warts, helminthes and others) are eliminated using a tool called plasma (not surgically ) and we do this within the first day of your visit to Retina.
• Other lesions that require a major operation result in a longer stay at Retina , because the control and removal of sutures takes place about a week after the operation.
• Major ophthalmoplasty surgeries (e.g. enucleation) require individual consultation with the patient due to their complexity and multi-stage nature.
