OCT of the fundus

GENERAL INFORMATION

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) of the fundus is the most modern method of examining the back of the eye – the retina.

Thanks to its extraordinary accuracy, which reaches 3 micrometers, OCT imaging allows to see and evaluate all the layers of the retina as if we were looking at them under a microscope.

Most importantly, OCT allows to evaluate the most significant part of the retina – the macula. Thanks to the macula we can see details and colors, we can read and write. If the macula is damaged, a person sees only the outlines of objects and does not recognize faces or bus numbers.

The most common macular disease is age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

OCT examination is particularly useful in diagnosing:

  • age-related macular degeneration (AMD),
  • central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR),
  • macular hole,
  • choroidal nevi.

At the Retina Ophthalmological Outpatient Clinic and Hospital we use state-of-the-art ophthalmic CT scanners, which allow much better penetration of the structures of the eye up to the sclera and choroid, even in patients with high refractive errors (they allow examination of eyes with errors ranging from -33D to +40D), and with significantly deteriorated radiolucency.

On our CT scanners it is possible to perform a good-quality examination in patients with corneal stains or cataracts, and even in patients with a minor vitreous hemorrhage, which used to be difficult or even impossible in the past.

Important! If you had problems with this type of examination in the past, and were described as ‘difficult to diagnose’, or a high refractive error made this examination impossible to be performed – visit our Retina Ophthalmological Outpatient Clinic and Hospital!

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

OCT examination is non-invasive, painless and safe for all patients, regardless of their age. It takes a few minutes. No special preparation is required.

Pupil dilation is not always required; the decision is made during the appointment.

Attention! Patients who had their pupils dilated should not drive for about 3 hours after instillation of the drops.
